Double Bass Studies at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley combines full-time dedicated professor with a stimulating learning environment of a nationally ranked university with an enrollment of over 29,000 students. The atmosphere of a rapidly growing urban area with many cultural offerings presents students with many performing opportunities.
At UTRGV double bass students receive comprehensive training in solo literature and orchestral excerpts as well as instrumental pedagogy and early music performance practice. Students interested in Jazz and Latin music also have opportunities to perform with an array of fine music ensembles within the School of Music.
The double bass studio at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is very active; most of our students perform professionally locally and regionally and take part in music festivals in the US and abroad. Our students are also strongly committed to music education. After completing appropriate courses, upperclassmen and graduate students are encouraged and given the opportunity to help educate the next generation of young bass players through the ¡Viva el Bajo! Double Bass Academy.
In the Spring we host the !VIVA EL BAJO! South Texas Double Bass Festival and organize master classes, recitals, and outreach activities throughout the year. Several double bass artists have performed and taught at UTRGV, creating opportunities for students, teachers and professionals from Texas and Mexico to meet and work with great masters of the double bass. This is UTRGV BASS!
